Line editing is geometry-first: you digitize the path click by click, then complete the attributes without leaving the panel. It's the flow for routes, segments, and networks — extending a layer like "Distribution Mains" along a new corridor.
Draw a new line
- Open the toolbar's "Edit" dropdown and choose the line layer under "Edit Layer".
- Choose "Create Feature". The panel prompts "Click Start to begin drawing."
- Start, then click the map to place the first vertex.
- Keep clicking to lay the path out vertex by vertex, following the alignment you want the route to take.
- Finish the line and review it in the panel.
- Fill in the main’s fields and click "Save changes".
The cleanest line work starts from visible context. Extending a main from an existing segment — rather than drawing an isolated stroke in empty space — keeps the network connected and the geometry honest. Turn on snapping so new vertices lock onto the segments and vertices they should meet: see Snapping and Shared Borders.
Edit an existing line
- With the layer active, choose "Edit Feature". The panel guides you: "Select a feature to edit".
- Click the line you want to change. Its attributes load into the panel.
- Reshape the path — correct a misdrawn stretch, extend the route, or realign it to the intended corridor.
- Update any attributes that the geometry change affects, then "Save changes".
The panel always asks which feature first, so a stray click can’t reshape the wrong main.
Practical notes
- Work at a zoom where the alignment you're tracing is unambiguous; vertex placement inherits whatever precision your zoom allows.
- Check each segment against its neighbours as you place it, not afterwards.
- Your saves show on the map straight away. See Edit Sessions and Tile Rebuilds.
