Maps & Layers

Labels & Symbols

Build a label out of your fields, and set how raster and WMS layers are rendered.

Before you begin
  • A project layer loaded in the Maps pane

Open the layer menu and choose "Labels & Symbols". Vector styling splits across two tabs, "Symbol" and "Label".

Symbol tab

Vector styling — one symbol, colour by category, colour by value, or a density view for points — is documented in one place: Style Layers.

Label tab

Turn on "Feature Labels", then build what each label says with the "Parts" builder — a sequence of fields and separators, read left to right.

Label "Hydrants" with an id field, a "Hyphen", and a subsystem field and you get H4310 - Kitsilano. No expression to write, no syntax to remember.

Then make it legible:

  • "Offset X" / "Offset Y" — nudge the label off the symbol so it isn't sitting on top of it.
  • "Text size" — small enough to fit, big enough to read.
  • "Halo" and "Halo width" — a contrasting outline, which is what keeps labels readable over a busy basemap.

Labels avoid collisions: at busy zooms some labels yield rather than overlap. Zoom in and they return.

Rasters

Raster layers show "Raster Symbology" instead, where you pick how the bands are rendered: a single band in greyscale, a single band through a colour ramp for elevation- or intensity-style data, or three bands as red, green, and blue for imagery.

WMS layers

A WMS layer has a "Display" tab for how it appears in this project and a "Source" tab for the connection itself. Its styling comes from the service, not from Tamaat. See WMS Service Layers.
